on why the silence and omg, weddings are a nightmare

So I could say: I’ve been sick, I had a massive site rebuild to do that they wanted immediately and I was down in NYC for a weekend, hence the almost three weeks of silence.

But the truth is I’ve just had nothing to blog about. Well, I do, but none of it is all that interesting. Do you care that I have a soap opera star for a client and her fans are freaking rabid? They love her. They visit her site with such devotion and love her “just an update” emails so much that I’ve never seen site numbers like this in my life? That because of her, my design site is getting crazy traffic? Granted I doubt I’ll get any jobs out of her fans, but hot damn.

You might care that my mom and I got into an argument when I was in NYC with her. About my engagement and how they expected to know first. Or that everyone wants to know when and where I’m getting married and I just want to elope. Apparently I’ll crush my mother if I do that, but frankly, hi, it’s MY wedding! I thought it was supposed to be about me?! I want to fly to Europe, get married and lounge in some villa for a week. I don’t want to have to pick a date or location or dress or decide who’s standing beside me at the altar or register for gifts.

I really don’t want to register for gifts. I can’t tell you how daunting the thought of presents I don’t need is… or the inevitable writing of thank you cards. I plan to encourage people to donate money to a cause, but according to past brides, even if I do that, I’ll still get stuff.

I DON’T WANT STUFF!

A good friend of ours just got married in September and although they registered, they still got some pretty random gifts. Bowls, apparently, are the go-to gifts if someone doesn’t want to buy off the list. Etched glass bowls with horses. WTF, no thank you.

I think if I didn’t have parents with such high moral standards (we aren’t allowed to share a room, or even the same floor when we visit, so nice), I’d never get married. We’d be together, have kids, move along with life, no need to make it “official.” And yes, I know all the arguments for marriage and yeah, fine, but still, COME ON. Who needs the stress?

My cousin likes to harass me to blog, so there, that’s what you get AW. 😛

Ooh, also, we went and saw the Avett Brothers in VT last weekend and holy shit, you MUST see them live. They are phenomenal. Their fans are also rabid. Maybe it’s a southern thing?

crappy life lesson #1242

Don’t do contract work for a friend without getting money upfront.

It’s not only disappointing when they don’t pay, it’s very disheartening.

why don’t people pay on time?

I have outstanding invoices from companies that are today over a month old. For the one, I just lumped it into next month’s invoice and said, PAY ME NOW. For the other, I said, what exactly is your pay schedule?

And then proceeded to be flabbergasted as I turned in an invoice today (still haven’t gotten paid for May), and I was informed I wouldn’t get paid for June until the end of July. Hello, WTF? The accountant there already doesn’t like me, so this should really be a fun email exchange.

I don’t get it. Someone does work for you, sends you a bill, you pay said bill. Where’s the confusion?

90 degrees + odd humidity = ick

It was hot yesterday, a high of around 85Ëš where we are, but the Chop and I took the dog for a three mile walk to the beach. Somehow, I managed to stumble and roll-walk onto my right foot, successfully spraining the outside of the my ankle. Unfortunately I didn’t realize that until after we tried to take her on another walk today and halfway into it I found myself in agony. I had figured it was just a sore muscle, or perhaps a charley horse… no such luck.

So here we sit, the weather hovering at 90Ëš, with the only air conditioner upstairs, lol. Living this close to the water, we get a nice breeze, plus we have a fan running, but the indoor temperature reads 85Ëš right now and the dog is panting like crazy. Tomorrow the portable air conditioner we want goes on sale (damn you Costco! Couldn’t you have made it on sale a month ago!?), but the weather looks like it will go back to the 70s in a few days, so it will be all for naught!

Except for when the weather once again decides to jump from 50Ëš one day to 85Ëš the next. Blah.

the ants go marching 12 by 12

The ants are successfully driving me bananas. They finally appeared to be slowing yesterday, until we went into the kitchen for dinner and found the black/grey granite countertops literally teeming. WTF.

After much death and destruction was wrought, the Chop and I looked up household remedies, and I proceeded to shake half a jar of cinnamon all over the counters, using a brush to dust the walls and the bottoms of the cabinets.

I think the Chop thinks I’ve gone over the edge.

The landlord finally got back to us (they were out of town, figures) and so we’ll be calling their exterminator today. Fingers crossed that they come out by this afternoon, ’cause I’m not sure my liver can continue taking the copious amounts of alcohol that I require to forget about the ants long enough to sleep.

indiana jones redux is crap

Do not go see the new Indiana Jones movie. It is SO FREAKING BAD.

I’m not kidding. It’s slow, it starts and stops, the acting is bad, the whole script is bad and seriously, Indiana Jones and ALIENS?! Please.

Sorry. Probably spoiled it for you. Whatever though, it’s really bad. I’d rather see National Treasure 2.

D.C. layovers can suck my a**

I haven’t written here in awhile, as I’ve started blogging for work and contract jobs are coming in at a steady pace, rendering me completely incapable of forming coherent sentences after 12 hours working online.

But right now I’m stuck in goddamn Washington, DC, where I was supposed to have a one hour layover (it’s been a three hour layover), and so I figured, hell, why not, let’s rage on the Internet.

I flew home on Saturday night and Sunday morning surprised my mom for Mother’s Day. It was great fun, but I always forget that a) I hate flying, b) the flights are so damn long and c) layovers in DC always end badly.

bees, bees everywhere

We have bees. Lots and lots of bees… and wasps. Where, you might ask? Excellent question. EVERYWHERE.

But mainly right at the front and back doors, which means I am not a happy camper when I have to leave the house.

Chop checked for nests, and it appears we have a few under the eaves (emailing the landlords…), but those appear to be wasp nests. So where the heck are the giant (seriously, the biggest freaking bees I’ve ever seen), coming from?

Could it be they are attracted to the daffodils planted around the house? Or perhaps the giant bush of something yellow in the yard? Or the flowering pink tree, which is either a cherry tree or a dogwood tree?

I do not know, but I do not like it!

why did I think this was a good idea?

Somehow, after months have passed, I always forget that I really don’t like being away from home, particularly when it’s for just a couple of days, I end up on a sofa bed (made of nails) and the fellow travelers are stressful.

In other words, I am sitting at the airport waiting to go home after spending two and a half days with my parents in Philly, and wondering why I thought this trip was a good idea in the first place, lol.

The only thing that is keeping me sane at this moment is knowing I will be at home and in my bed, in less than three hours.

a very ill weekend

Thursday night Chop’s sister flew in for the weekend. About an hour after we got back to the house (around 11PM), Regina decided that something didn’t agree with her and proceeded to puke on my rug.

Chop took her outside, where she puked twice more.

Thinking she’d gotten it all out, we went to bed around midnight.

Starting at 4AM, she threw up multiple times, with Chop getting up and cleaning (such a good boyfriend, lol) out her crate, putting her back, coming back to bed and getting up every half hour after that to repeat the process.

It was a very long night, that basically became a very long weekend, with his sister getting sick most of the day Saturday.

Yesterday, after we dropped her at the airport, I came home and took a nap.
