cover letters: not for the humble

The worst part about job hunting? Cover letters. I loathe them… they make me want to pull out my hair and scream bloody murder.

“Hi, my name is so and so and I think I’ll be a fantastic addition to your company. Let me tell you why I’m so wonderful…”

Sigh. I hate that. I feel like a phony. Just give me a job and I swear you won’t regret it. Grr.

Side note: When you’re having a piss-poor day, don’t watch Brokeback Mountain, Tristan and Isolde or The Weatherman.. even if that’s all that came from Netflix. It will not make your day better. It will, in fact, make your day ten times worse.

life’s a damn rollercoaster

One of my good friends has terrible taste in men—terrible. They always end up being jackasses who either cheat on her or try to use her for her money. We finally thought she had found a winner.. the wedding was being thought about, the ring was eyeballed and then he hooked up with someone else. She’s a magnet for jerks.

Then, recently, she and a good guy friend of hers decided that they wanted to start something. They’ve known each other for several years, have dated each other’s friends, have spent long nights on the phone… and now they’re spending long nights in bed.

She graduates college in a couple of weeks and last night they had their commencement ball and I did her makeup and that of some of her friends. It was highly entertaining as her adorable male roommate bought a bottle of Grey Goose just for me and fed me shots all night, and two of her other guy friends who were going together helped me fix hair and dresses—I love the gay men. 😉

As I was doing their makeup and flirting with all the guys—mainly the gay ones, because they had the best comebacks—her date hit on me. The guys were nervous and having problems with their tuxes and I was bored and half-tipsy and it’s so much fun making rugrats blush bright red. It didn’t even occur to me that he thought I was being serious—everyone else knows I’m nuts!

Asshat. He slipped me his number. Guys are jerks.

In better news, I’m hitting up a colleague for a job today. Ugh. Wish me luck.

ode to the city

Oh, the city.

You’re going to have to bear with me, because I’m slightly tipsy. 😀

It was a really good few days. My family is fun and we all had a great time.. although I will say that once my parents left, my sister and I had a bit more fun. 😉 That included sushi a few times, large quantities of vodka, two shows on Broadway, ridiculous flirting (all me, she won’t.. it’s sad) and lots of shopping.

My parents left on Tuesday for Israel—we’ve now heard from them a few times, lol, and they are having a fantastic time. The food is good (one of my mother’s fears), the hotel is great (another mom issue) and they haven’t died yet. 🙂 lol

On Wednesday, the sister and I walked 75 blocks.. ::cough:: Yeah, my bad. Canal Street was a bit farther than I remembered.. and we have blisters and sore muscles… and it rained a bit. Once we got there we shopped for awhile, bought nine purses and jewelry and etc., then proceeded to sit at an outdoor cafe in Little Italy and drank martinis at three in the afternoon. 😀 It was good times.

We took the subway back, got off on 42nd to buy tickets to Stomp, got distressed when we found out the Orpheum was on 7th and 2nd and went back to the hotel (on 56th) to shower and nurse blisters.

Then we grabbed the subway to 8th, ate sushi and went to Stomp.

FYI, if you go to Stomp, take earplugs and don’t be completely exhausted. It was good, but we both wanted to leave and we both had our ears plugged for the last thirty minutes. When it was over, we headed outside… and realized it was raining. Pouring, actually.

So, we trudged three blocks to the subway, laughing hysterically in the sopping rain. Then we proceeded to go in the wrong subway entrance… TWICE. We only realized it was twice because we passed these two guys three times and by the third time they got up enough courage to talk to us… and tell us we were in the wrong place. So out we went, back into the rain (twice) and then down into the uptown train. Where we waited… for fifteen minutes. Apparently there was a problem on the tracks. 😛

I woke up this morning to the sound of a voice over an intercom, advising guests that there was a fire in the building (WTF) and that we would be advised about what to do… I went back to sleep. Two hours later, still being advised. Fortunately nothing came of it.. it was only a small fire… ::eyes rolling::

So, shopping, sushi, Broadway, shopping, sushi, Broadway, sushi, shopping and pedicures.. that was about the extent of my trip to NYC. 🙂

Now my sister’s plane is stuck at JFK due to a battery failure (she’s peeved) and I’m at home, cleaning my house, downing vodka.

Ahh.. what a life. 🙂

nyc

Entertaining things to do in New York City does NOT include driving to and from JFK airport. Can I say taxi? Get. a. taxi.

Entertaining things to do in NYC does include… going to “The Producers” with my parents (although it was way too bawdy for my dad, it was hysterical), eating pizza (mmm, pizza), shopping and working in the business center at the hotel (’cause they lied about Internet access in my room—bastards). This has turned out well for me, because I just got a job offer from the guy next to me.

Which is good, ’cause my boss quit this morning because the Big Boss is such an asshat.

Yeah, that was a fantastic way to end my day. Hearing that my life is going to get way worse until I leave the job I’m in. Sigh.

weekend

It’s been a quiet week in here. Work has been busy, busy and I’m having to do some overtime ’cause I’m leaving tomorrow for NYC for a few days… I’m picking up the family at the airport there tomorrow. See, my parents are taking a long, long overdue trip for three weeks. To Israel.

My dad’s incredibly excited and my mom updated her will.

Does that tell you a little about how the next few days will go before they leave? Mmhmm.

I plan to get some excellent food and new shoes/bags/earrings/stuff out of the deal.

hi ho, hi ho

Aaaaand it’s been one of those days.

You know the kind where you have to convince yourself to wait until after work to start drinking? Ring a bell?

Yep, that was my day… and I worked from home. I’d say that’s a sign.

I’ve been job hunting at night. It’s less entertaining than I remember—rather, I’ve never really “job hunted,” so it’s pretty much everything I expected it to be. Mostly boring, trolling sites, reading job descriptions, debating the merits of moving to Kansas (um, no) and if my skills with certain scripts are honed enough to call myself an expert (again, no).

I finally stumbled upon one last night that really piqued my interest. Solid company with a fun motto, great benefits and a job that I could do well… but I’d have to move.

I don’t know if you remember the last time I moved… the bad news, apartment hunting day two and when the movers ripped my couch. Feel free to wail along with me.

Needless to say, the certain knowledge that a job change will also bring an apartment (probably state) change makes the insider kinda grumpy.

why abstinence doesn’t work

In the Boston Globe this morning.. State widens teaching of abstinence and the subtitle, “Romney gives faith group sex ed grant”— take off the last two words and it reads way better. 😉

I had a lovely phone call from one of my good friends yesterday. One who I know is more intelligent than I, who paid more attention in school, who had a higher GPA, etc. Why am I bringing this up, you ask?

Because she called to ask if she might be pregnant. (Mind you, she had already called Planned Parenthood.)

Here’s the kicker—she’s still a virgin.

So what does abstinence teach? Nothing. And it prevents the students from getting accurate information.

Hence, abstinence doesn’t work.

entertain me please

Today was the first time I didn’t get carded when buying liquor at a liquor store. It was sorta surreal. Now I feel old. (Everyone who’s older than me, shut up. :P)

We now have three people working in our office. While I was gone, they hired a new guy and he’s based in our office. Jury’s still out… he seems alright.

Yesterday morning I received a call from a guy I met at the firefighter/medic party last year. He asked me out. Apparently he got my number from my friend who is dead to me now. He’s just finalized his divorce. I don’t know if that exactly makes him prime dating material right now (I’m going with a very solid no), but aside from that questionable fact, I’m a little busy seeing someone else right now. 😉

It’s been a long couple of days. Can’t anyone post something entertaining?

tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow

I’m packing.

Apparently I’ve managed to accumulate twice the paraphernelia that came with me. Granted, two suitcases are filled with books and old photos from my boxes in the garage—my mom decided to do a little spring cleaning (read: she made me go out and dig through the scary garage).

In between packing, I’m working—which is always loads of fun.
