January 8th, 2006itching like crazy
So here’s the thing. I’m itchy—almost constantly. I’m trying the whole “mind over matter” thing, but it doesn’t really work all that well. I have trouble sleeping, I hate putting on clothes and leaving the house and my eyes burn a little. After doing much research online, I’m pretty sure I might be slightly jaundiced—as the whites of my eyes are a little yellow… but that’s about it, so maybe I’m not jaundiced. AAAHHHHHHH!
I didn’t fit with any of the main reasons for jaundice/itching… until I saw that BC, more importantly estrogen, can bring this about. Looking back over the past couple of weeks, I have to wonder if my being so sick and taking antibiotics, while still taking BC, has brought this about. If so, the only help is to stop taking the BC (I did, two days ago). Then today I read that the itching might persist for a few weeks (or months), until my body has “realigned” itself. I want to die.
There are a few documented cases where people with an itching problem committed suicide, and I half to admit, I totally understand that. It’s debilitating, to say the least.
Anyway, the point of this diatribe was to say that while I will try to keep up with the blogging, I might fade in and out—just functioning is a chore lately.
Update: And irony… apparently the antibiotic I am on has caused severe itching in those being treated with it. Lovely. Stupid drug.

You might want to go see a doctor…? I hope you feel better soon, you’re overdue for a health break now. 🙂

Well.. yeah, maybe I should. I’m debating it. If I’m right, there’s nothing they can do. Argh.

They might prescribe a soothing lotion or something helpful…

call the pharmacist. Tell him all the things that you are taking and ask about drug interactions. THey probably know more than the doctors because you are taking several different medicines.

i have excema… so i totally know how you feel. i have it on “normal” parts as well as really unfortunate areas as well (not there you pervert!) but i totally understand. and then i had some other itchy thing like a half a year ago and there wasn’t anything to make it go away. yuck.
my advise, cool showers (hot water irritates) go buy some aveeno lotion and soaps (or bath soak) and talk to the pharmacist and your doctor. oh and don’t itch! it’ll just hurt more after you’ve itched it.
i’d say hugs to you but i don’t want to touch your leprosy. love ya!

…any possibility you just have dry skin from indoor heating? I find I feel a little itchy in the winter sometimes for that reason…

Have you been tested for mono? I got a horrible rash when I took antibiotics for a throat infection because it turned out I had mono and the two don’t mix well…

Oral Estrogens are methylated to survive the first liver pass and as such are mildly liver toxic. Considering that most oral antibiotics are significantly liver toxic it makes for a bad combination. (Don’t tell me you’ve been drinking too?)
Your liver is probably fine, but it wouldn’t hurt to get your liver enzymes checked. It could explain the jaundice.

Quick update from the co-worker: the insider is in the hospital. She’s been in since Sunday night.
They’ve been running a bunch of tests since and still don’t know what she has. A lot of the obvious things have been ruled out.
I’ll let her tell you all about it. Hopefully she’ll be home tomorrow.
