is there a vet among us?

Hi. I am a cat owner and I suck and they should be taken away from me.

See, here’s the thing…

I thought I would give them a bath before my parents came to visit and my dad switched the shower head (right now it detaches). Seems logical, yes? Well… kinda. It’s a small shower and they really aren’t keen on the whole bathing thing.

But Izzie got done, no problem. A little crying on her part, but as long as I was talking or singing to her (I am weird, my cats are weird, deal with it), then she was fine.

Then came Ellie. She’s the smaller of the two, the one who only wants attention occasionally and really only to play fetch. She cried a lot. And she squirmed.

When we were almost done, she was thrashing about and caught one of her back foot’s claws in the drain. She struggled and something ripped and then there was a little bleeding.

I am the worst person in the world, aren’t I?

I have NO IDEA what to do and I wonder… should I take her to a vet? She’s walking OK, and there wasn’t much blood and I seriously feel like the most heinous human on the planet right now.

Somebody tell me what to do.

Should I wait for my dad (Thursday night) or should I take her to a vet?

  1. have you checked her widdle footsies? if they aren’t bleeding, and she’s walking fine, she may have only torn a bit of the claw and it’ll grow back or heal or whatever. either way, the kitty paw is a pretty strong sonnofa and it’ll heal well enough.

next time though, the best way to bath them is to just fill the bath a little with slightly warmer than room temp and to get in with them, and deal with sitting in the tub. that way you have a better hold on them, and you keep them away from the drain. i tend to wash my kitty in the middle bit of the bath, and she hunkers down between my legs and suffers through it.

don’t worry. you’re a good parent. you don’t bath the cat simply as a means of entertainment… not that i do either… honest.

  2. I did and it’s not bleeding anymore I don’t think.

My sister is now on the phone offering advice, as both my parents aren’t answering their phones. ARGH.

And the thing is, I don’t have a bath, lol. Just a standing shower.

  3. ah… yes. then i suggest maybe a big tupperware box to use as a bath for them. the noise the shower makes tends to really freak them out, and you’ll get lovely scratches as parting gifts.

  4. They make them that big?!

The noise, hmm? Mine were just right pissed about the wet.

No scratches, although Ellie nipped my should during the whole claw ripping fiasco. No blood on my part… kinda wish there was.

  5. yeah, the storage type tupperware bins. mine hates the noise of the shower. she gets used to the wet. i think also the bath type thing makes them used to the wet since it’s a constant temperature.

but they also have “quick baths” which are just these like baby wipe things for cats. works well enough to get rid of surface dirt and loose hairs. i have to give mine a full bath though for her dry skin issues.

  6. Huh. I’m going to get one of those. That makes sense.

But the wipes are where I’m going… I’m never bathing them in a shower again. Forever. Horrifying. I feel terrible.

My sister thinks I should put Hydrogen Peroxide on it and wrap it in gauze to prevent infection… she’s had many cat issues with hers, lol.

I a) have no peroxide or gauze and b) would be killed by my cat.

    Thoughts?

  7. Better safe than sorry, go to the vet. And then pamper the cat with treats and stuff. And call the Pet Psychic. Your cat will forgive you, don’t worry.

  8. Awww, poor little mites! here’s what I do with my babies. If they start whining and crying I tell them to have a chocolate biscuit. If they keep on with it I check where they say is sore. If they’re still carrying on after a few hours I threaten them with the doctor and they soon shut up.

    Best mother in the world!

  9. i wouldn’t bother with the vet. too pricey and cats are sneaky little beasts. mine got her foot banged in a door and she was all limpy for 5 minutes, then the next thing you know, she’s fine, but you look at her and she starts to limp, only problem is she limped on the wrong foot. brat. just trying to get sympathy.

Wendy… So your cat’s a little schemer, hmm?

PreronaÒ€”same with my older sister. πŸ˜‰

OK, she seems fine this morning y’all. Woke me up with her nose in my face, which is normal for her, lol. She’s running about and appears fine, so I guess I’ll wait until my dad gets here and he can check her out.

    THANKS! πŸ™‚

  18. you are so not a bad cat mom. it sounds like she’s really fine–don’t beat yourself up. if she starts limping or something then maybe a trip to the vet is in order?

  19. I think that’s the plan… but I still feel terrible.

And she’s doing much better this morning. πŸ™‚
