cereal wars

When I was a kid, I loved Kix cereal. And Lucky Charms. There’s probably five or six other brands that I loved, but those were the two that I adored the most. If you think about it, they couldn’t be more different. Kix is air popped and corn based—and that’s it. Lucky Charms is some sort of regular cereal pieces, but mainly it was all about the sugar marshmallow charms.

My sister used to go through the entire box of Lucky Charms and siphon out the marshmallows… I think that’s why I ended up sticking with the Kix most of the time.

Why am I talking about cereal, you ask? No reason. ‘Cept I woke up with my first alarm (I require a couple), and therefore had time for breakfast here at home, and I had cereal. I haven’t had cereal in ages, but about a week ago I was in the grocery store and I saw Honey Bunches of Oats. And that was way more appealing to me than Kix or Lucky Charms.

In case you wondered (which I’m sure you didn’t but you’re reading this, so shut up), Honey Bunches of Oats is grub. The best. And now my crazy cat is drinking the milk from the bottom of the bowl, so I must run.

BUT, question of the day (because you know I’m all about reader participation): What cereal do you eat? Is it different from what you ate as a kid?

  1. no different at all. it just depends on what i buy. i loved kix, i loved shredded frosted wheat things, i love the honey bunches of oats, love apple jacks, lucky charms, oh and my fave is life. mmmm plain life cereal. but i tend not to buy much cereal, because it’s pricey, and i don’t drink milk, and soy milk only goes with certain types of cereal…sigh.

  2. Ooo.. I agree on the shredded wheat. And soy milk goes famously with Honey Bunches of Oats! 🙂 (And apparently cats like it too..)

  3. Soy milk? Ew.
I want to be the real-life Seinfeld and have lots of different cereal boxes vying for my attention on my kitchen shelves.
And these days, it is very different from what I had when I was a kid. But I’m not sure about the English names so I’ll just remain a cereal mystery.

  4. Soy milk is yummy! And now I want to know about French cereal… is it different? Are there marshmallows? Does it have chocolate? Or is it more of a black truffle and baguette cereal? 😉

  5. Black truffle all the way, babe. And foie gras.
No, we’ve got good old Kellog’s and Jordan’s and stuff, but I’m not sure they keep the same names.
Soy milk is horrible. But it’s all right, when you do come over, I’ll have some in the fridge for you.

  6. Sounds just delish (gag). 🙂

You’ll have it in the fridge? What a nice host you are! 🙂

  7. Crunchy Nut Cornflakes which is different because my Mum never used to buy them because she was an old witch! (just joking maw, ya know I loves ya!)

  8. as a kid the sugary cereals ruled – surar crisp, alphabits in particular. I eventually graduated to honey nut cheerios, and now when I get the urge to indulge in cereal its either multi-grain cheerio’s or Carb fit Special K. good god.

  9. Hmm.. I’ve never had Crunchy Nut Cornflakes Ms. Mac, but I’m going to find them and try them. 🙂

Honey Nut Cheerios! I knew I forgot something Kerry. Loved them—still do. Multigrain though? And Special K? Damn girl, we’re young—eat the sweet stuff. 😉

  10. nope, not really any change, but I adore variety (in all aspects of life: big develish grin) so I still love: banana nut crunch, cap’n crunch, golden grahms and raisin bran. It depends what kind of mood i’m in.

  11. the crunchy nut cornflakes are predominantly a UK think i think. the man talks about them, and he calls our frosted flakes… frosties. that’s the name on the box, so he refuses to eat the ones we have here in the us because it’s a different name. oh he’s cute. dumb, but cute. but when he visits i make sure to have his usual breakfast cereal, wheatabix.

  12. Single Gal: Golden Grahams—I love me some Golden Grahams. With extra cinnamon. Yum.

The “man”—damn wendy that’s just cute as hell. 😉 And what the F is wheatabix? That sounds just wrong.

  14. Andy, Apple jacks! I used to love those!! …I don’t know if you can get those over here anymore – but alas insider, you’re right, I should spend more time looking at the sweet stuff. (although the multigrain cheerio’s are kinda sweet…).

I’m not wild about the cereals with marshmallows or fruit in them though… ick.

  15. Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Apple Jacks. Yum. Everything else—eh. Especially Grape Nuts. 😛

Kerry.. true regarding the Multigrain Cheerios. However, cereal with crunchy marshmallows is fabulous.. the fruit, yech. I agree on that.

  16. my best friend calls wheatabix by an alternate name… super colan blow. it’s very fiber-licious. it’s actually very good with a little bit of sugar on top and maybe some strawberries. but it doesn’t go with soy milk…

    Comment by wendykat — September 20, 2005 @ 2:01 pm

  17. Err.. ‘k. Whatever you say. *gagging sound*

  18. When I was a wee lad, I loved me the wheat chex. The Rice Chex kicked ass, too. Raisins were a prerequisite with both.

On the sweet cereal side, I was all about the Lucky Charms, sugar smacks (now called some crappy ass non sugary sounding thing to assuage parents) and the Fruity Pebbles.

I just heard about Fruity Pebbles Treats. Like Rice Crispy treats but fruity. And sugary. Sounds fucking delicious.

Now, I like the Quaker granola, Honey Bunches of Oats and Raisin Bran Crunch, preferably all mixed together. However, as I have largely foresworn carbs, it’s bloody unlikely that I’ll be eating any of those anytime soon.

    Pass the bacon.

  19. OK, so fine, most of your cereal choices are acceptable—but raisins are just GAG. Unless they’re the golden raisins and you are eating them with Camembert or Brie of some sort.. with a nice piece of honeycomb. But even then I prefer currants. Raisins are just—ick.

Ditto with the bacon, but seeing as how you are old and set in your ways and all that shit.. 😉

  20. Screw you raisin hater!

    Comment by Grampa — September 20, 2005 @ 3:54 pm

  21. They kill the grape Gramps.. kill it. For what? Icky chewiness that gets stuck in your teeth. Yech.

  22. You’re young. I can forgive your lack of taste. Perhaps when you ripen you’ll understand.

    Comment by Grampa — September 20, 2005 @ 4:01 pm

  23. See, no, it’s when you’re old that your taste buds hit the dust. I’m young and all mine work—yours are old and rapidly depleting.

Perhaps someone will just have to tell you when things taste bad from now on, ‘k?

    First: Raisins are icky.

    Comment by the insider — September 20, 2005 @ 4:04 pm

  24. I happen to agree that raisins are ick. 😛 I’ve never been a fan. I avoid buying muffins just in case I mistake raisin’s for chocolate chips. *sigh*

    …but what’s this about bacon?

    Comment by Kerry — September 20, 2005 @ 4:49 pm

  25. Yay on the raisin hating.

Bacon.. I am a vegetarian. Bacon is not really something that enthralls me, so to speak. lol 🙂

  26. when i was young i went trick or treating. i came home, pumpkin bucket overflowing with sugary goodness, when what’s this? do my innocent eyes deceive me? no. it can’t be. a fucking box of raisins? you fuking bastards! oh i see, you decided to trick me eh? instead of treat? well, lemme get mister box cutter here, and we’ll “trick” you too…. uhm… hi, uh. so i have some pent up aggression.

i’ll go breathe and say some healing mantras…

    Comment by wendykat — September 20, 2005 @ 8:58 pm

  27. I WAS THERE TOO!!!

Bastards. They tried to trick us. Damn hooligans.

Forget the mantras, let’s just go take down the raisin empire.

  28. but my man likes raisins. and well, he’s pretty into this one candybar that has raisins in it, and… he’s awful cute. i’d hate to break his heart…

ooh, there’s a bakery i wanted to work for and they make oatmeal cookies, but instead of defiling them with ugh, raisins… they use dried cranberries. oh man, so good.

  29. You fuckers need some help.

    Comment by Grampa — September 20, 2005 @ 9:32 pm

  31. You wouldn’t like them.

    Chock full o’ the raisins.

    Comment by Grampa — September 20, 2005 @ 9:40 pm

  32. LOL.. I go take a shower and badaboom.

You know wendy, we just have to make concessions for the men in our lives. They may be dumb when it comes to food, but damn if they aren’t cute as hell.
