August 15th, 2005the problem with blogs
I think I have finally found the problem with blogging. It’s just way too damn interesting. Here me out.
I was out tonight at a concert (the band America), which was awesome. It got over relatively early, so Jen and I headed to a bar in a very hip, coastal town nearby. I decided to stay sober tonight, because a) it’s about a 20 minute drive, and b) it was raining. No big deal, though, as I can normally have fun with no chemical aid whatsoever. As the night progresses, I end up talking to this guy who had been attempting to buy me drinks all night. He seemed a rather intelligent, college-educated type of guy. He works in real estate and blah, blah, blah. Now normally, I can talk to anybody about anything—for hours. It’s just one of those random gifts I was given (honestly I would prefer world-class violinist gifts, but that’s neither here nor there).
The problem, you ask? I was so bored, and all I could think about was coming home and checking blogs to see if anyone had anything interesting to say. Is that wrong, or what? I knew that I would come home and be highly entertained, and half the time, educated, by what my fellow bloggers post—and this guy couldn’t even compare. And he was cute and educated… WTF?!
So then I read Graham’s recent posting on his blog (very good read, btw), and I realized that I am not the only one who has this problem!
I feel better now. 🙂
(Which just goes to show you that blogs are a serious problem to social graces everywhere—I feel like I can relate better to most of you than to the people outside my door. Shit.)

Uh-oh…
You need rehab, quick!

I know! I am concerned!

Hang in there. It’s normal. Blog people are only more interesting because they usually only share the most interesting things. It’s a fantasy world highlight reel. It’s like intellectual porn.

Interesting take on it Harley—Intellectual Porn would be a fabulous name for a blog. 🙂
But, if they are only sharing the most interesting things, how come Joe Blow at the bar doesn’t share his most interesting things?

Joe Blow at the bar isn’t interesting.
If he had a blog and you came across it, you’d get two lines into reading and move on.
Don’t confuse college educated with interesting. Sounds like you really wanted him to be interesting, because he fit the mold of what you are looking for. Well, except that he was a complete bore… 🙂

OK, very true. And you’re right regarding the college educated comment. (And he was a complete bore.) I digress—what I am looking for won’t be found in a bar. 😛

Unless you’re looking for a vodka tonic and stale pretzels.
I’ve done that before though too. Been real upset that everything about someone I meet is right on, but there’s just something not there. That’s a dangerous position to be in too. ‘Cause given the right atmosphere, it’s a recipe for ‘settling’. It’s like fat-free ice cream. Mmmmm, it’s still ice-cream. It’s just as good as the real thing. Yeah, right. haha

Well I do like vodka… but I see your point.
And it’s always that something isn’t there. Damn fat-free ice cream. It really sucks you in, doesn’t it? Argh.

Yeah, it’s a choice made based on priorities. You forgive the lack of flavor because you’ve prioritized the fat-free part over taste. So you settle for less taste in trade for something you think is more important.
Just like with people. You might think one thing is important so you look past some other things you don’t like. So first you have to determine if your priorities are good for you. Most of the time, with pressures coming at you from everywhere; they aren’t. You’re conditioned to believe that one thing is important, when a lot of times it isn’t. I think the key to everything is in figuring that out. And I don’t think it’s a black and white answer. It’s grey and fluctuating; balance.
Oh man, I’ve just rambled all over your site. Sorry about that. Sometimes subjects catch my interest and I blah-blah all over the place.

OK, a) I definitely don’t mind the rambling—I always appreciate another’s viewpoint, particularly in this area and particularly because you are a guy, and b) I hate grey answers. 😛
I’m a fan of crystal clear, here-ya-go, choose-this-one kind of answers. And honestly, my biggest problem (according to everyone), is that I am just way too picky, and that I should settle. But I’m not a settler.

Hey Insider,
Thanks so much for the mention and link. Very much appreciated.
For now at least I like the blogosphere… it’s a great place for me in the interim of this re-adjustment I’m making. I’m sure the time will come when I’ll feel differently.
Thanks again, hun 🙂
