mardi gras in january in dc

I am very excited today. New president, new era, dooodoodoowwaaaaaaaah.

I have CNN on, I’m barely going to be working and I am totally hyped. I debated heading to DC (I have a friend who lives downtown), but decided against it. Flights were expensive, I don’t have vacation time to spare, etc., ad nauseam. Now I wish I’d said fuck it and gone. 🙂

off work, too much snow, what to do?

It snowed twice this weekend, which means we have ice, covered by loads of snow, and temperatures that will most likely stay below freezing for the rest of the week. In other words, it’s fucking cold out and the dog and I are not pleased.

Yesterday the Chop and I took Regina on a long snowy walk. Sadly I don’t believe I can do it by myself, because a) I’m clumsy on ice and having a dog pull me down a hill sounds like a million bones breaking and b) there is a house/farm with six (yes SIX, wtf are they making in there?!) German Shepherds who a few weeks ago jumped their rock wall and menaced us in the street (I almost fell over and died—fortunately Porkchop just kept moving).

So we’re watching Anne of Green Gables on DVD.

😀 Exciting stuff, yes?

go see slumdog

One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to blog every day. It may or may not happen, lol, but I’m going to try and the Chop thought I needed to state that on here for accountability. Darn him!

We finally succeeded in seeing Slumdog Millionaire today (we’ve been trying for well over a month) and if you have the chance to see it, you must. It’s incredible and moving and brilliant and sad and awesome. 😀

Insider tip: don’t leave when they start rolling the credits. They have something fun at the end.

The wedding planning is in full swing and so my other New Year’s Resolution, to not drink vodka at home, has flown out the window. We’ve chosen a date, a location and a photographer (I move fast) and while we are still hoping for a small family wedding, my mom keeps adding people to the invite list. Sigh. I swear I will cap it at 50, but we’re already at 40-something and I really don’t see her stopping anytime soon.

We’ve invested in a gross of alcohol for 2009.

mmmmm

The Chop and I went out for dinner at the most amazing Mexican place tonight.. very eclectic, authentic food, an awesome bartender and strong drinks. What more could you ask for?

We sat at the bar (hoping to catch a movie) and the father-daughter duo across from us, after hearing our order, had the bartender throw an order of sticky ribs on our list and paid for it. It was a) unbelievably nice and generous and b) the best, omg best short ribs we’ve ever had. There were moments of pure foodie bliss and quite a hilarious conversation with them and the bartender.

We missed the movie, lol.

Happy Thanksgiving!

My turkey has been in the oven for an hour, I have cinnamon roll dough rising (the Chop is very excited), plus I have a load of laundry going and a load in the dishwasher. I’ve been very busy this morning.

I’m also watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Maybe it’s because I know Miley Cyrus is a little ho and that the giant balloons aren’t real, but I remember this being far more entertaining when I was a kid.

Am I wrong?

in case it wasn’t clear… we’re engaged!

So the Chop proposed Friday night (and yes, I said yes, lol), and while normally I’d be happy as a clam, my parents were not as enthused as I would’ve preferred

Instead, my parents gave me a bit of grief because the Chop didn’t ask permission for my hand—I should note that I find this practice archaic and told him he didn’t have too, and in fact, I’d prefer if he didn’t. Unfortunately do to that, my parents were, according to them, “very surprised.” Which I also find odd, as we’ve been dating for two years and have mentioned several times we planned to marry.

Whatever. Friends, my cousin and his relatives were very happy and congratulatory, so I am holding on to that, and ignoring the less-than-heartfelt congrats from the parents. Figures anyway, lol.

It’s verrrrrry shiny… 🙂 That solves a lot of problems, lol.

tigers and monkeys, oh my

This is possibly the cutest thing in the world. You must look at the slideshow.

Chop says I can’t have one though. So mean. 😛

You KNOW you want one.

typeracer = new crack

I just found TypeRacer, and let me tell you, it’s crack for nerds like me.

You race other people by typing paragraphs… the higher your WPM, the more races you win.

Like I said, crack, lol.

the swell season

The Chop and I just got back from seeing the Swell Season (Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, backed by The Frames—did the movie Once) in Boston and they were completely incredible. If they come anywhere near you, go and see them, you will not regret it.

The group had gone for a walk before they started, happened upon a busker, got to chatting with him and found out he would be attending—so Hansard called him up on stage and he sang, played harmonica and Hansard’s own guiter. He was totally thrilled and incredibly good—he made sure to plug his website, so there’s a shout-out. 🙂

Again, if the Swell Season comes to town, GO SEE THEM.

They’re playing in Belfast on my birthday and I’m still trying to figure out how to convince Chop to take me. 😀
