ow, double ow, seriously this hurts

When I was six my family moved from the east coast to the west. Our belongings were moved by the military, but my parents drove our cars, with my sister and I switching between them through the journey. I don’t remember much about it.. until the day I slammed my head in the car door.

We were at a Long John Silver’s, and after getting out of the car, I slammed the door — hard — with my head tilted in. According to my Dad, I screamed and blood started pouring from my head. I only remember him holding my head and walking me into the restaurant, past staring patrons, to the bathroom where he proceeded to rinse my head and check to see if I needed stitches.

I don’t have any memory of the pain – but I distinctly recall being unable to swim in the pools of the Motel 6s we stopped in along the way. I was only allowed to sit on the edge of the pool, my head wrapped in an ace bandage, while my sister swam back and forth.

The night before we left the Cape, I pulled the stroller out of the back of my car and slammed the door down – on my shoulder. Gasping in pain, I had to sit on the ground before heading to the room from the parking lot. A red mark, and pain at the touch, was the only indication that I’d hurt myself. Six days later and I have a rather large green bruise, with a lovely purple and red center, that hurts to high heaven every time I raise my arm a certain way.

My Dad seems to think I might need to stop shutting car doors. Ass, lol.

needing/getting by ok go

I came across this video a week ago, and showed it to the Peanut, who promptly fell in love. Today he crawled up onto the couch next to me and we watched it again. Music and cars? Magic!

vroom, vroom

The Peanut loves moving vehicles — cars, buses, trains, whatever — if it moves, he’s mesmerized. So today we took him to a new outdoor barbecue joint at a busy intersection for lunch. He sat (bundled for the 40 degree temp) clutching a fry in each hand while we ate for thirty minutes, doing nothing but cooing and tracking the cars with his eyes.

Sadly he’s still teething, so it’s nice that we can do something so simple to make him happy.

brush, brush, brush

The Peanut is once again teething, which means our life is a long slog of drool, the occasional extremely cranked baby and lots of nibbling on anything he can get his hands on.

I was at the dentist this morning (every six months, boo yah) and the hygienist surmised that he’s probably cutting his second molars, in addition to the incisors I think are coming in. Yay, I said, because molars are his FAVORITE thing. She laughed.

I love the entire staff at my dentist’s office. I’ve tried to steal the receptionist – she’s the sweetest, funniest, most entertaining receptionist I have ever met. She’s pushing 60, still wears size 2 and has her hair done every week. Who does that these days?!

The hygienist and I always have a lovely chat about current events – she reads People every Friday, without fail. Today it was the Grammys, Whitney Houston, did they air brush Adele and seriously, why do little boys grow up and have stinky feet?!

Best office ever.

to the sea, to the sea

We saw a pod of whales right off the coast yesterday, playing less than 100 yards off the shore. The Chop and I were impressed, but the Peanut only had eyes for the waves. We spent most of the time on the beach pulling him back, carrying him up the beach and letting him walk determinedly right back to the edge, before swooping him back again.

We took a giant container of bubbles (something he loves), thinking he’d want to run after them – no dice. The siren song of water was all he heard. 🙂

happy day for love

Valentine’s Day is one of those fun holidays where I get to make cards (seven this year, fun!) and eat sugar. What’s not to love?

engaged workaholic

Today is the birthday of my super cute, adorably awesome husband. So we decided to decamp to the tip of the Cape for a couple of days. The weather is gorgeous (40s, but sunny and no wind), the town is lovely as always and the Peanut thinks the ocean is awesome.

Plus, as it turns out, I’m an engaged workaholic. Finally, a title that fits perfectly. 😀

We love the show Parks & Rec – and my favorite character on TV right now is Ron Swanson.

rip wh

When I was a kid, my parents were extremely strict about what we watched (TV, movies) and what we heard (the radio, cassette tapes). As a result, I’m always good for a laugh when people reminisce about so-and-so and I’m left completely in the dark.

I didn’t get to see The Bodyguard until it came out on TV, and even then, my sister and I had to sneak in a viewing when my parents were working. But ever since, I’ve had a love for Whitney Houston and her voice (also Kevin Costner, hello). As it was the very early days of the Internet, I didn’t know everything about her personal life (as I do now about literally any celebrity. Seriously, if you ever meet me in person, my expanse of knowledge about the lives of celebrities would blow. your. mind.), so it never occurred to me who she was married too or that she did drugs.

I hope they find out that she died from natural causes – or a freak accident – because it’d be terribly sad to know that the world lost such a great voice because of drugs.

stupid sd card

For the past few months my phone has been claiming my SD card is full and suddenly refusing to take pictures. So I scroll up my gallery, back to perhaps spring of last year, delete 10-20, and then move on my merry way. I finally attached my phone to my computer to upload pictures today, and 894 later (and that’s only since November), my phone still contains over 2200 pictures.

That I don’t want to remove.

It’s nice to be able to scroll through and see the Peanut from age 4 weeks to now. It’s nice to see pictures of us in Italy, pictures of us on the Cape, pictures of him in the snow, with our families, etc. I am loathe to remove these pictures from my phone, even though I know they’re preserved on my computer (and largely on FB).

Having the past at your fingertips is a lovely feeling.
